The advent of generative AI tools have forced museum publishers to adapt their policies and procedures to protect scholarly integrity while identifying the ways authors and their institutions can take advantage of new technologies in an ethical and responsible way. This webinar marks MuPuDIG’s first foray into this contested conversation. Here we present the results of our recent survey on generative AI and highlight the issues that are top of mind for our field today. Then we focus on the key questions to consider while developing a policy for your museum or department. Rob Stein of the National Gallery of Art provides an overview of their institutional guidelines and how they were created and are being rolled out. Katherine Boller of Yale University Press; Allee Austin of the Amon Carter Museum; and Katie Reilly of the Art Institute of Chicago are on hand to discuss the unique approaches of their own institutions and some of the thornier questions we’re all facing: Who should participate in crafting policy and getting buy-in? Should we resist the use of genAI or try to manage it responsibly? What are our obligations as stewards of creativity, knowledge, and community? How can we develop AI literacy in our field and institutions?
